“My Sami descent, my living intimately with the untouched natural wilderness and a strong, almost physical, longing for freedom, finds its expression in my paintings. My observations and intimate knowledge of the soul of the Norrbotten wilderness, give rise to a lifestyle that stimulates paintings depicting the landscape, people and animal life at the Arctic circle.
My strong belief in this way of life made it impossible to spend precious time away in a city, or a traditional art school. I decided that my own surroundings had to be my teacher; the closeness to nature refined and crystallised the sensations and perceptions emanating from the mountains and fells, with their many moods, the wild animals, and in particular the reindeer who hold a unique position in the land between freedom and subservience.
My lifestyle does not conform to the modern world, I strive to avoid the artificial constraints on time and space imposed by such items as a watch, a calendar or the precise coordinates of a place. These for me represent the most effective way to kill a vibrant living being.
Therefore my CV is perhaps somewhat unconventional. I do not always keep track where and when I have had exhibitions, generally, I can mention a few places, but the time is diffuse because I exist in a timeless world.
The art of painting must not dominate the art of living.”
